Who can apply?

International students that meet the following requirements may apply for the study cycles taught at Lusófona University:

  • Holders of a qualification that grants entry into higher education, understood as any diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority establishing approval in an education programme and granting the right to apply for and gain admission into higher education in the country where it was awarded;
  • Holders of a Portuguese Secondary Education Certificate or legally equivalent qualification.

In order to gain admission to the desired study cycle, international students must:

  • Take the internal admission exams required for the programme they wish to attend. The dates and exam format are defined by the university annually
  • Have knowledge of the language or languages in which teaching will be carried out;
  • Meet the pre-requirements, should there be any, under the terms of applicable legislation.

The International Student Call applies to students from outside the European Union that are not holders of a higher education qualification who wish to attend a Bachelor’s or Integrated Master’s programme at Lusófona University.

Who cannot apply?

The following students are not covered by the definition of international students:

  • Nationals of a member state of the European Union;
  • Family members of Portuguese citizens or nationals from a member state of the European Union, regardless of their nationality;
  • Those who, not being nationals of a member state of the European Union and not being covered by the previous paragraph, legally reside in Portugal for a continuous two-year period on 1 January of the year they wish to be admitted to higher education, as well as the children who legally reside with them;
  • Those who, on 1 January of the year they wish to be admitted to higher education, benefit from a status that grants them equality of rights and obligations granted under an international treaty celebrated between the Portuguese state and the state of which they are nationals;
  • Those that require admission to higher education through the special access and admission regimes regulated by Decree -Law nº 393 -A/99, of 2 October, altered by Decree-Law nº 272/2009, of 1 October.

It is understood by family members of Portuguese citizens or of nationals of a member state of the European Union, regardless of their nationality:

  • The spouse of a citizen of the European Union;
  • The partner with whom a European Union citizen lives in domestic partnership, constituted under the terms of the law, or with whom the European Union citizen keeps a permanent relationship duly certified by the competent entity of the member state where they reside;
  • The lineal descendant of under 21 years of age or who is dependent on a European Union citizen, as well as that of the spouse or partner in the sense defined in the previous subparagraph;
  • The direct descendent dependent on a European Union citizen, as well as that of the spouse or partner in the sense defined in subparagraph ii).
